The male protagonist of the show, Kuroiwa is a monk-in-training that enlisted to a Tokyo public school in an attempt to "steel his heart" and get himself rid of all worldly desires, in line with his religion. This attempt is later conflicted by Kawai Mona, however, as she continually shows him affection in order to make him fall for her. Typically stoic, he ripostes to Mona's usual charms with a cold scowl, not to give in to desire, but his struggles and true emotions are often revealed as he blushes and reacts love-struck away from Mona's view. Because of his time as a monk, he gets easily excited from things others around him might consider normal, such as a school festival or a concert, often staying around and losing focus when he admires such activities.
