A medical missionary residing in Yokohama. He was the inventor of the Hepburn romanization system, and is considered to be the oldest and most influential foreign resident of Japan at the time. Impressed by Bird's many accomplishments, he fully cooperated, including presiding over an interview to hire an interpreter and guide.
